USAF Airfield Driving Practice Exam

Obtaining explicit clearance from air traffic control is essential when entering an active runway because it ensures that all safety measures are adhered to in a highly regulated environment. Air traffic control has the responsibility of managing aircraft movements and can provide the necessary clearance that guarantees the area is safe for entry. This protocol helps prevent collisions and accidents by ensuring that ground vehicles and aircraft are coordinated effectively.

Entering an active runway without clearance poses a significant risk, as aircraft could be landing or taking off at any moment. Therefore, simply waiting for the nearest vehicle’s clearance, proceeding without delay, or relying on visual assessments of the area are not sufficient; they do not account for the real-time situation managed by air traffic control. Proper communication and adherence to protocols are critical for operational safety on and around airfields.
